Based on the Super Famicom role-playing game Star Ocean: The Second Story and PlayStation Portable enhanced port Star Ocean: Second Evolution, the remake sports a unique 2.5D aesthetic, combining 2D pixel art and 3D environments. Audio includes full Japanese and English-language voice acting.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R Original Soundtrack ships on four compact discs from distributor CDJapan. Excerpts of all tracks composed by Motoi Sakuraba are streaming on the official album website. An EP comprised of seven preview tracks is available through streaming platforms.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is also available for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. A free demo for Windows PC is available through Steam, verified for use with the Steam Deck.
Enix published the second installment in the Star Ocean action role-playing game series for the PlayStation console in 1998. Sony Computer Entertainment introduced developer tri-Ace's science fiction title to English-language territories the following year.
In 2008, Tose Co., Ltd. developed the PSP remake Second Evolution. Square Enix published the soundtrack album that year on two compact discs, bundled with a DVD including the opening cinematic and a promotional video. The 87-track digital edition of the Star Ocean: The Second Story soundtrack album is on streaming platforms, alongside the 87-track score from the PSP adaptation.
