Capcom's Medieval open world action RPG debuted on Xbox 360 and PS3. Following years of preproduction overseen by director Hideaki Itsuno, with world building input from various contributors, scenario writing proceeded by Haruo Murata. The story pits the protagonist from the village of Cassardis, whose physical characteristics are determined by the player, against the Dragon who stole his or her heart.
Gameplay design for Dragon's Dogma sought to simulate multiplayer combat through the integration of ally AI, as part of the network-integrated Pawn system. The player can issue orders to non-controllable party members (which can be swapped between players online over the network) and receive their voice-acted strategic advice on the battlefield. The grab command allows the protagonist to grip onto enemies to climb the neck of a looming cyclops or mount the flapping wings of a griffon.
Early in production, Makino brought on T's Music members Masayoshi Ishi (Sengoku Basara) and Rei Kondoh (Okami) to contribute to the game score. To complement the game's design documents, which were heavily influenced by Western fantasy RPG elements, the music director collaborated with composer Inon Zur and singer-songwriter Aubrey Ashburn of Dragon Age: Origins. Orchestral recordings took place at the Bulgarian National Radio Studio, featuring the Sofia Film Orchestra Choir.
Publisher Square Enix's two-CD, 86-track Dragon's Dogma soundtrack is available for purchase domestically through CDJapan. The digital album published by Sumthing Else Music, featuring 34 selected tracks, is streaming on Spotify and Amazon Music.
