The full orchestral scores by composer Mahito Yokota feature contributions by Ryo Nagamatsu and musical advisor Koji Kondo. In a 2007 Iwata Asks interview, Kondo described his role as ensuring that the sound reflected the "Essence of Mario," while contributing several original compositions. They include "Egg Planet," featured in the E3 2007 trailer.
Yokota highlighted the long-running use of steel drums, bongos, and congas in Mario music as suggestions of Latin music influence. The composer mentioned, "When it was decided that I would compose the theme for Super Mario Galaxy, I tried not to rely on the orchestral sound that I was most comfortable with. I tried to make it pop music, with a taste of the tropics and a space-age feel."
The Super Mario Galaxy 2 score featured sixty orchestral performers, conducted by Taizo Takemoto. For the 2010 Iwata Asks follow-up, Yokota describes his approach to the world map theme. "Players come back to Starship Mario after dashing around all sorts of galaxies and working up a sweat. We'd like them to cool down a bit while they look at the world map, catch their breath, then set off on the next adventure."
Super Mario Galaxy is included in the previously released Super Mario 3D All-Stars for Nintendo Switch. The compilation includes an in-game music player with background tracks from all three featured 3D Mario titles.
Super Mario Sunshine Original Soundtrack consists of 58 music tracks, composed in 2002 by Koji Kondo and Shinobu Tanaka. The 3D platformer for the Nintendo GameCube is set on the tropical island of Delfino, featuring Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor and Gelato Beach location themes.
Pony Canyon published Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack in July of 1996. Composed by Koji Kondo, the 36-track album features stage themes "Jolly Roger Bay," "Cool, Cool Mountain" and "Bob-omb Battlefield" from the Nintendo 64 launch title. All tracks are streaming on the Nintendo Music app, available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
