The science fiction-themed first-person shooter was developed by Id Software in 1996 for Windows, using a custom engine supporting real-time three-dimensional rendering. The PC title came with a highly publicized soundtrack by Trent Reznor and the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.
In 2000, Midway Games handled the Quake port for the Nintendo's N64 home console, including a tailor-made score by Hodges that complements the title's labyrinthine, medieval environments by mixing orchestral and electronic elements. Midway introduced a two-player split-screen mode, and colored lighting not seen in the original.
Bethesda Softworks' remastered 2021 edition of Quake for Windows through Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can be augmented with an emulated port of Quake 64. The console game can be played by downloading the software through the Quake Remastered Add-Ons menu.
From the liner notes by Hodges:
The challenge for me from the audio perspective was in how to deliver an aggressive and edgy sound using very low quality (small) samples. I used less samples in the music and reused sound effects as instrument samples at times. I really liked how it came together and the game is one of my favorite works.Bandcamp - Quake - Nintendo 64: Official Soundtrack
Congrats to @idSoftware @bethesda @machinegames on the release of the Quake Remaster. I was so surprised to see the full E2M6 in there! Thank you for doing that. It killed me to cut it in 1996, and I sincerely appreciate it. #quake pic.twitter.com/qMfnleSWzO
