Penned by author Kaoru Kurimoto, heroic fantasy novel series Guin Saga centers on a leopard-headed amnesiac, possessing uncanny fighting prowess. The serial publication is credited as the longest running continuous work by a single author.

A televised adaptation premiered in April of 2009, directed by Atsushi Wakabayashi and produced by animation studio Satelight. Several weeks after airing, record label Aniplex published the soundtrack album on two compact discs. Music is contributed by Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu, with arrangements for the animated score provided by frequent collaborators Hiroyuki Nakayama and Tsutomu Narita.
