The remaster sports repainted, hi-res character textures, with new, dynamic lighting, and over two hours of exclusive developer commentary. The story centers on the Department of Death's travel agent Manny Calavera, drawing inspiration both from Mexican folklore's Day of the Dead and gritty 1940s film noir motifs.
The Grim Fandango Remastered soundtrack is hosted on Steam, with streaming on Skill Tree Records' YouTube channel. All music is composed by Psychonauts series composer Peter McConnell. The orchestral score was recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, blending South American folk music styles and film noir staples, integrated with jazz, swing, and big band music genres.
"Manny and Meche" was performed live at the GDC 2024 Concert, hosted by Austin Wintory. The concert recording is streaming on YouTube, edited by Dallas Crane.
The composer joined the Calavera Quartet in performing selected themes for a jazz concert coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Grim Fandango, recorded on November 1st of 2023 at San Francisco's Cafe du Nord. Those selections include "Swanky Maximino," "Blue Casket Bop," and "Casino Calavera," performed with Justus Dobrin, Jason Bellenkes, Gio Benedetti, and Deszon Claiborne.
Grim Fandango Remastered debuted on January 27th of 2015 for PS4 and PlayStation Vita consoles, along with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. The remaster is also available for iOS and Android devices, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch consoles.
