Set in the year 1999, amnesiac protagonist Akira attempts to escape an indoor amusement park that never closes. Players navigate peculiar interactions and branching dialog choices with the park staff, among them pessimist fortune-teller Camellia and self-proclaimed superhero Tokoyoman.
Minato Aoi handled game design and programming, using Unity game engine to display dynamic backgrounds and Live2D character art. Drawing on his background as a novelist, Mitsuki Nagase penned short stories for each character in preparation for his role as scenario writer. These stories were handed to illustrator and Live2D modeler Shingetsu Ogino, informing her character designs.
1999 Tokoyo Building Soundtrack by Yasuhiro Nakashima will be available separately as paid DLC upon launch, courtesy of Kodansha Game Creators Lab. Early last year, the composer was the recipient of the the Best Audio award at the Taipei Game Show Indie Game Award for his work on the interactive novel and Roger, also published by Kodansha. TearyHand Studio and designer yona won the Grand Prix award, the show's top prize.
Regarding his approach to the game's score, Nakashima posted, via his x.com account, "It's recreating that late-20th-century sound using classic PCM sound sources like the Roland Sound Canvas VA, JV-1080, Korg Trinity, and more! I'm so grateful to Roland and Korg for preserving those vintage PCM synths in software form.
"For those unsettling textures, Zebra 3 really shines. Modern, clear sounds pair surprisingly well with the vibe of old-school hardware synths. As a fairly veteran DTMer with about 30 years under my belt, it was a total blast getting to use software versions of the synths I dreamed about back in the day for actual work. I especially love the JV-1080."
